All levels of instruction at Shamrock Acres Training Center are provided by Linda Coates. Having the same instructor for all levels of training provides continuity in the program, which uses gentle, motivational methods to teach the dogs. Teaching the entire family to work with and understand the dog is an important part of every dog’s training.

Linda has been training dogs since the late 1960’s. She enrolled in her first dog obedience class thru the 4-H program with a Wirehair Fox Terrier, and soon thereafter fell in love with the sport of obedience and the wonderful relationship that developed with her dog. In the late 1970’s she acquired her first Airedale Terrier, Duffi, a true test of patience and creativity to train. In 1980 she began instructing obedience classes and became Director of Training for the Greater Louisville Training Club. She spent the next 10 years teaching and continuing to educate herself on the many training methods that were available. For 8 years she taught classes with the Jefferson County Adult Education Program using positive motivational methods which she has found to be quite effective in teaching new behaviors. Linda has been instructing at Shamrock since 1996.

Linda has competed in obedience trials for almost 30 years with a number of different dogs. She has put titles on Smooth Fox Terriers, Labrador Retrievers , Pugs and numerous Airedales. One of her Airedales Ramsey not only became a Utility dog but was ranked #1 in the country 6 times. Butler was her first Airedale Champion, her first agility dog and her 3 rd Airedale to receive a Utility title. Butler was ranked #1 Airedale 3 times, and was the first Champion Airedale to receive a UDX title. He went High in Trial and High Combined at the National Specialty at the age of 10! Butler also was invited and attended the AKC National Obedience Invitational in St Louis.

Linda’s current companion is a Pug named Otis. At age 7 he has over a dozen All Breed High in Trials, multiple Specialty High in Trials, and is about to finish his Obedience Trial Championship. (this would make him the second Pug to do so) He is the first Pug to ever receive a UDX2 title and has has since earned a UDX3. He has his Rally Novice, Excellent Standard and Excellent Jumpers agility titles as well. Otis has been ranked # 1 Obedience Pug in the country 6 times and has attended the AKC Invitational Obedience Tournament the past 4 years.

Linda is also working on putting a CDX title on Polly, Otis’ little sister and is getting ready to show her in agility as well. Caper is Linda’s 6year old Airedale who will be soon showing in agility and utility. Hootie is the newest member of the family and is a 7 month old Labrador Retriever.

Linda is a Lifetime member of the Louisville Kennel Club and Greater Louisville Training Club. She has been Obedience Chairman for the Airedale Terrier Club of America for 15 years and is currently serving on their Board of Directors. She is a founding member and Obedience Chairman for the Southern Indiana Kennel Club and recently joined the Pug Dog Club of America where she will serve as the Agility Chairman for their upcoming National Specialty. She is also a member of the Bluegrass Pug Fanciers.

Linda is a certified Canine Good Citizen Evaluator and is approved to judge non-regular classes for the AKC.
