Now there is a new vaccine to help fight the destruction caused by canine periodontal disease. The inflammation and/or infection of the gums and bone around your pet’s teeth is caused by bacteria that accumulate in the mouth, forming soft plaque that later hardens into tartar. It affects 8 out of 10 dogs over the age of three. The porphyromonas vaccine aids in the prevention of canine peridontitis as demonstrated by a reduction in bone changes. Periodontitis, the most common bacterial infection in dogs, can lead to long-term effects such as heart, liver and kidney disease and tooth loss if left untreated. The veterinarians at Eads Animal Hospital will be glad to assist you and your pets in the prevention of dental disease.
Teaching your pet to brush it’s teeth should begin slowly and gently. You should choose a small, soft toothbrush or a finger toothbrush and a toothpaste formulated for pets. Begin by using a small amount of the toothpaste on the toothbrush and offer it as a daily treat. When your pet has accepted this reward, you can begin to gently rub the surfaces of the teeth. Start by cleaning only a few teeth and then gradually increase the amount of time spent brushing each day until the task can be completed with ease. Be sure to brush the spaces between the teeth as well as next to the gum line. Try to brush your pet’s teeth once daily or at least twice a week.
Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive technique for viewing the internal structures of the abdomen. A lapsroscope (camera) inserted through a small incision in the abdomen magnifies internal structures of the abdomen on a TV monitor for a more thorough examination. Additional small incisions are made to facilitate the use of surgical instruments. The most common application of laparoscopy is biopsy.
In recent years, laparoscopy has been adopted as a less traumatic and less painful alternative to traditional spays. Studies have concluded laparoscopic spays caused less surgical stress and up to 65% less post operative pain than a traditional open surgical spay. The small incisions greatly decrease recovery time. In larger breed dogs, gastropexy can be performed at the time of spay.
